As far as we know, Windows 10 dark theme is very much asked feature in Windows 10. When Windows 10 was released globally, the most attractive personalization option was its color perks. At first windows 10 came with two themes, Dark & Light, which caused some of the native apps, such as the Settings App to had black colored UI. Since this far, Microsoft made a lot of UI changes, including Accent colors, though they did not make it up, a total dark UI. In curiosity, Developers made their own Dark themes which transform the whole windows 10 environment into the dark.
Let’s go through those gorgeous Dark themes starting from the Default Windows 10 Dark theme.
Editor’s Note: It is advised to create a restore point before trying the third party themes on your Windows and do it on your own risk.
Windows 10 Default Dark Theme
It is the one that I mentioned in the introduction. After applying this dark theme from Settings app, all native apps will appear in dark theme UI. All of the factory apps support this dark theme, though this dark theme cannot change your Windows Explorer into the dark. Here is how to apply the default Dark theme on Windows 10 Version 1803.
Open Windows Settings. Click Start. On the left sidebar, click on the spinning gear icon. Now click on Personalization in the next screen. Then in the Color tab, scroll down to see “Choose your default app mode”. Below that you have to choose a choice, whether dark or light. That’s all, you’ve done it.
This Windows 10 theme has some limitations though. No third party apps other than from the Windows Store can’t have this dark theme applied. Even for the apps from the Windows store also needs the Dark theme support to reflect the changes.

In Windows 8, Microsoft changed the look of the good old Explorer application completely. It got the Ribbon UI instead of the menu and a toolbar which is hard to disable. Windows 10 includes the same app, along with a new Store app, File Explorer UWP, which is not ready for daily use yet. In recent Windows 10 builds, the classic File Explorer app has got support for a dark theme.

Microsoft is working on adding the dark theme to the classic desktop app File Explorer in Windows 10. The latest Redstone 5 build includes the dark theme for File Explorer which can be enabled using the Mach2 tool. As of this writing, there is no other way to turn it on, since Microsoft is working on this feature internally.
Here is how it looks:
In the future, enabling dark mode in File Explorer will be possible using an option in the Settings app, which switches the app theme under Personalization -> Color. The screenshot above demonstrates the current version of dark mode in File Explorer, which appears to be incomplete. The majority of the app is still using the light theme. It is not known when the feature will be pushed to the stable branch of Windows 10, but it is coming, and that is great.
Many of the first-party apps in Windows 10 follow the system option or have their own options for enabling the dark theme. File Explorer is the default file manager app in Windows 10, so it definitely needs a dark theme.
How to enable the dark theme in File Explorer
- Download the mach2 tool.
- Type or copy-paste the following command:
mach2 enable 10397285
. - Restart Windows 10.
- This will enable the dark theme in File Explorer.
As for the UWP File Explorer app, it is not clear when the app will be activated by default for all Windows 10 users. Currently, the classic File Explorer is the only app suggested for file management tasks in the OS. The new theme, when finalized, should come to the public later this year with the Redstone 5 feature update.

The dark mode is helpful while working in low light conditions. Popular smartphone operating systems and many popular apps offer a dark theme or dark mode to help users use smart devices without straining eyes under low light conditions.
Windows 10 has also been offering a dark mode for some time, but the dark mode is available for apps and Settings only. You cannot apply the dark mode to File Explorer or Windows Explorer.
This means, there is no built-in way to change the File Explorer or File Explorer background color. Yes, there is a workaround to change the File Explorer background color in Windows 10, but the solution doesn’t work smooth.
Luckily, starting with Windows 10 Redstone 5 build 17666, you can enable the dark mode for File Explorer as well. In short, you can now change the File Explorer color to black in Windows 10 without using third-party applications.
While this is going to be helpful for many users, it would have been nice if Microsoft offered a dark gray color instead of (or in addition to) the current jet-black color. An option to choose a custom background color for File Explorer would have been great as well.
